Our Story
The History of Fairfax
The history of the Fairfax Church of Christ dates back to 1887. Because of the introduction of mechanical instruments of music to the worship at the Court Street Church of Christ which was meeting here in Winchester, J. W. Harding and approximately 15 others left the Court Street congregation and began meeting in the Harding home located at 14 West Hickman Street. This was on May 29, 1887. Some four years later the group built their first building on the corner of what was then Fairfax Street (now Lexington Avenue) and Maple Street. The congregation became known as the Fairfax Church of Christ.
The congregation grew and prospered in its' new location so that by 1912 the membership had reached 300. Though it has faced many ups and downs, the congregation continues to grow and to preach and teach the word of God. In 1977 because of the crowded conditions and various other difficulties, the congregation purchased a 10-1/2 acre plot of land on the southern edge of Winchester and began making plans for a new building. On July 15, 1984, the congregation saw it's plans fulfilled and met for the first time in their new location.
It is our prayer that the congregation will continue to work together in the Lord and that we will prosper spiritually and grow to be everything that God would have us to be.
